Ward Brothers, in conjunction with Uralla Shire, started Black Butt granite and sandpit in 1989.
Council use the granite as a DGB layer under bitumen, on road construction, and repair work in the council area. NSW’s main roads department used the granite as a DGB on the New England Highway in sections from Guyra to the Moonbi ranges. This granite resource became very popular as an underlay for house and shed foundations in the building industry. Also used for driveways and farm roads. Sand from the pit is used for concrete work, horse arenas, pipe fill, and foundations.
At present, Black Butt pit is supplying material to the Uralla/Armidale area, as well, the material is trucked in B doubles to the Tamworth area for concrete and horse arena works.
In 2018, Ward Bros. organised a geotechnical resource assessment which will be provided with the tender documents.
Following the death of one of the partners, the pit is being sold to wind up the partnership.
The Black butt Pit has been SOLD.
